Tokugawa Ieyasu was the head of the Tokugawa Clan and the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. He was first a vassal of Imagawa Yoshimoto before the Battle of Okehazama in 1560. Afterwards, he served under the victor at Okehazama, Oda Nobunaga. He became his most trusted commander besides Nobunaga's sandal-bearer Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who also rose to fame. When Nobunaga was forced to commit suicide by General Akechi Mitsuhide in 1582, Tokugawa Ieyasu aided Hideyoshi in defeating him in 1582. Soon, the two became rivals and Tokugawa aided Shibata Katsuie and Oda Nobutaka in rebelling until their defeats at Shizugatake and Nagakute. Afterwards, he allied to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. On his death, he opposed his seven-year-old successor Toyotomi Hideyori and defeated the Toyotomi Clan Army at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. On this, he was made shogun until his death in 1615.
