Scotland (Empire: Total War)

Scotland is a minor faction in Empire: Total War. It is an emergent faction. It can rise up and rebel in the region of Scotland. Unusually for a minor faction, Scotland has a unique unit in its roster: Clansmen.

Unit Roster

Scotland has a largely generic European roster. However, it does have access to Hessian Line Infantry, Chasseurs Britanniques, Ferguson Riflemen and Life Guards--a trait shared by the roster for Great Britain.

Contrary to what logic might suggest, Scotland does not have access to most Scottish units such as the Royal Ecossais, Scots, and The Black Watch. Scotland initially has unique infantry, Clansmen, but loses access to these units as it upgrades its government building in its home region. 

History

In-game, at the start date of 1700 England and Scotland already appear as a united kingdom of Great Britain. In reality, though, the two realms were still separated at that date (although in personal union under the joint rule of William and Mary), and were formally united only under Queen Anne with the Acts of Union, 1st May, 1707. The Union expanded trade, integrated Scotland within the advanced English and imperial economies, and put an end to the previous period of economical stagnation; however, it was also met with widespread, if disunited, opposition and mistrust in the general population. The unpopularity of the union would later revive Jacobitism: two pretenders of the dispossessed House of Stuart attempted to invade the British Isles on several occasions, backed-up by France and Spain and enjoying some support in Scotland. This, however, proved to be pointless: the last Jacobite uprising was crushed at the Battle of Culloden (1746), which also marked the end of the clan system in Scotland. After Culloden, thousands of Scots enjoyed prestigious posts in politics, trade, and colonial enterprises across the empire. Scotsmen were particularly appreciated as soldiers. Even if still by mid-century Scotland was a poor rural, agricultural society with a population of 1.3 million (1755), in the following decades it became a leading industrial hub.
