In Shogun: Total War, the Rebels and Ronin represent the rebels, monastic orders, rogues, minor clans and other independent forces active during periods in which the campaigns occur. They appear on the campaign map as minor factions controlling one or two provinces each.

In the 1530 and 1550 campaign start dates, Rebels and Ronin control most of Japan. Unlike in later Total War games where factions are always at war with rebels, the seven clans do not begin at war with the Ronin and Rebels. Declaring war against one rebel faction will drag the player into war with all the Ronin and Rebels. Diplomatically, rebel armies may be supported by neighbouring rebel armies when a rebel controlled province is invaded.

Rebels and Ronin also feature in the Mongol Invasion campaign. They control a number of provinces in northern Honshu.

Description[]

Rebels daimyo

Rebel Samurai.

"As well as the great Clans, Japan also has many smaller factions who must be overcome by any Daimyo who intends to become Shogun. These include Ronin, masterless Samurai on a quest for wealth and honour; smaller neutral clans who will fight fiercely for their independence; rebellious peasants who have tired of the oppression of their masters; and fanatical Ikko-Ikki Warrior Monks. Many regions of Japan are already under the control of these factions, but as history progresses they will continue to take advantage of opportunities to revolt, or of the power vacuum left by the death of a great Daimyo. The Rebels and Ronin do not all work together under one leader and therefore cannot be controlled as a clan would be. The fact that these warriors belong to splintered factions does not make them any less of a threat to the Clans vying for the position of Shogun."
