General Information[]

The Otomo Clan is the only clan to begin the campaign following Christianity as a religion. While Christianity brings with it many benefits, including better wealth generation potential and early access to gunpowder units, the Otomo Clan is disliked by all other clans due to religious differences, and its daimyo suffers an honor penalty due to his converting to Christianity. The combination of poor daimyo honor and being a Christian faction surrounded by Buddhist provinces means that the Otomo Clan has to deal with very high unrest in its first few provinces, until more honor can be gained and missionaries can be recruited to speed up conversion.

The Otomo Clan begins the campaign at war with the Shoni Clan and Ouchi Clan, which border its west and east respectively. It also borders the Ito Clan to the south, and the Sagara Clan to the west. Both are initially neutral. The Ito, in particular, usually remain neutral for a prolonged amount of time as it has to deal with the Shimazu Clan. Both clans, however, are good targets for the Otomo Clan as they are potential competitors for the valuable trade nodes that dot the coast of Kyushu.

Due to its initial position on Kyushu, an island near many trading nodes, the Otomo Clan can stand to become very wealthy should it survive its difficult initial position. This is aided by the Nanban Trade Port it has in its home region from the beginning, making it the only playable clan that is both near many trade nodes initially and can also immediately recruit trade ships. The Otomo Clan can incite a rebellion in its own capital and allow rebels to take over, before building another Nanban Trade Port and then recapturing its initial province for a total of at least two Nanban Trade Ports.

The Otomo Clan is the only faction that can lease land to foreigners, permanently using up a building slot of a province and losing one Honour in exchange for 4500 koku. This can help it bolster its treasury early, though use is tricky as all Otomo daimyos have lower than average honour already thanks to their Christian nature.

Militarily, the Otomo Clan fields superior matchlock units. Its Portuguese Tercos are far better than Matchlock Samurai and Matchlock Ashigaru, and it can field powerful gun-armed Donderbuss Cavalry, which more than compensate for their short range with their devastating firepower. Otomo matchlock units can also be recruited much earlier, with lower-level arts and buildings required.
