The Uesugi Clan is a faction in Total War: Shogun 2. The Uesugi Clan are renowned for their warrior monks. They start at Echigo Province, in eastern Japan.

Description

The Uesugi are proud of their Buddhist faith, and rightly too. They are a pious and worthy people. Despite this religious solidarity, the history of the Uesugi is anything but tranquil. Their daimyo, Uesugi Kenshin, changed his name and took control of his new clan when his original Nagao clan helped one Uesugi faction win a family dispute! This fractious and religious nature may explain why they can recruit better and cheaper monks for their armies and as agents! There is much for these monks to do if an Uesugi lord is ever to be shogun.

General Information

The Uesugi can recruit and maintain warrior monks more cheaply than any other clan. They can also recruit better fighting monks and more effective monk agents than any other clan. This gives the Uesugi a strong incentive to not convert to Christianity, which would cause them to lose access to all monk units.

The Uesugi family tree is one of the most barebones among all major factions. The daimyo, Uesugi Kenshin, is 15 years old, making him the youngest daimyo in the game. It is very possible to play an entire campaign, even on Long or Domination, and have him as daimyo throughout. He is unmarried and has no children. The secondary general is his 19 year old brother. Uesugi Kenshin can immediately marry one of the daughters of his neighbors, the Ashina and Jinbo Clans. The Ashina daughter, in particular, comes with the Prudent Wife trait, which decreases army upkeep.

There are Uesugi rebels in Echigo itself, and to the south there is the Yamanouchi clan of Kozuke province. Luckily, there are peaceful relations with the Ashina clan of Fukushima, and the Mogami clan of Uzen province, but both of these areas have resources, wood and stone respectively, which could be of considerable use. In keeping with the religious bent of the Uesugi, Kozuke province has a tradition of philosophical scholarship that could be harnessed to the Kenshin's purposes. A navy might also prove useful, as Sado, off the coast of Echigo, has plentiful gold deposits.

The Uesugi have a potentially deadly threat to their south-west, in the form of the Takeda Clan. Despite not having historical grievances in each other, the game is hard-coded for the two to declare war on each other, usually within a short time span. The Takeda Clan tends to become one of the strongest clans toward the mid-game, so they can present a significant thorn in the Uesugi's side for westward expansion.

Uesugi clan bonuses include better trade income, which is stacks well with Echigo's naval tradition and its increased trade income. The Uesugi can further capitalize on this bonus by sending ships to the nearby northern trade node. This, coupled with the fact that most of the northern provinces are wealthy in their own right, means that the Uesugi can stand to be very wealthy and secure if it survives its initial wars. 

The Uesugi also train cheaper and superior warrior monks, powerful units that trade numbers and armor for high attack stats and powerful abilities. Unfortunately, these monks are mostly relegated to the late game due to their technology requirements. The Uesugi are also one of the only factions that begin the campaign with a Buddhist Temple, allowing it to immediately train a monk agent and capitalize on the monk's slightly higher success rates.

History

The Uesugi clan was a Japanese samurai clan, descended from the Fujiwara clan. They are noted for their power in the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. They are also quite known for Uesugi Kenshin, a notable Sengoku warlord.

Uesugi Kenshin was a daimyo who ruled Echigo province in the Sengoku period of Japan. He is equally remembered for his prowess on the battlefield, as well as his skill in administration. His followers believed him to be an avatar of Bishamonten-the Buddhist god of war.

He was born to Nagao Tamekage. He became the ruler of Echigo at just seventeen. He died in 1578 at just 49 years of age.

The current Uesugi leaders were originally the Nagao clan of Echigo, and were vassals to the Yamanouchi faction of the Uesugi clan. The Nagao fought alongside their masters against the Ogigayatsu, another part of the Uesugi clan, in a bitter dispute. The Yamanouchi, weakened by a war with the Hojo, were forced to seek help from the Nagao lord, Kagetora. His help included adopting the name of Uesugi, and taking control of the whole Uesugi clan! Just to make matters even more complicated, Uesugi Kagetora (as he now called himself) changed his name again to Uesugi Kenshin. He was an adherent of Bishamonten, the war god and took Buddhist vows. He then stepped down in favour of his brother, who proved to be staggeringly divisive and unpopular. Kenshin returned to power and now contemplates the future.
