"Deliverance" of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was one of the key objectives of the First Crusade. Begun by Godfrey of Bouillon, primary leader of the First Crusade, the Canons were formed to "protect" the most holy of places. In time, the Canons became associated with the Order of St. John, and while retaining their name, these elite soldiers are no longer locationally tied to the actual Church.

HistoryEdit

The Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri was a knightly crusader order set up by Crusader Prince Godfrey of Bouillon, selfdeclared Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri (Protector of the Holy Sepulchre). The order was form to defend the many churches of the Southern Levant and not just the Holy Sepulchre, namely those on Mount Sion and Mount Olivet. They remained active in the Southern Levant up until the Fourth Crusade. After some internal misgivings within the Catholic Church Pope Innocent VIII, in 1489, dissolved the order; their property was given to the Knights of St John.
